Japan and Anime Expo: Review of 10th DoKomi
A big birthday cake was presented to the DoKomi on the Whit weekend. This year saw the Japan and Anime Convention celebrate its 10th edition in Düsseldorf. 45,000 fans of this Japanese pop culture attended – with the event occupying several exhibition halls and the CCD Congress Center Düsseldorf. DoKomi looks back on a successful development: it has grown from the initial 1,800 participants to 45,000 visitors
Commenting on this success Hilmar Guckert, CEO at Düsseldorf Congress Sport & Event, says: “With its colourfully dressed participants DoKomi paints a very special picture in the north of Düsseldorf every year. On the premises of Düsseldorf Congress Sport & Event it has developed into an important meeting point for the Japanese pop-culture community over the past few years. At present DoKomi occupies more than 60,000 square metres and is constantly introducing new features.”
The two-day event revolved around such themes as Anime, Manga, Cosplay and Japanese music, games and pop culture. Organisers created an additional focus this year with the DoKomi-Gaming-Festival: a complete exhibition hall was dedicated to computer gaming and e-Sports tournaments.
Cosplayers presented their costumes in various competitions – including the pre-finals for the German and European Cosplay Championships. In various workshops DoKomi participants learned how to make their own costumes, prepare Japanese dishes or draw and write their own mangas. There was an extensive line-up of concerts and entertainment acts presented on three large stages. Additionally, dealers and exhibitors from the fan community took part – including more than 500 illustrators and designers. The big integrated Food Festival offered specialties from Japanese cuisine.
Appearing as guests of honour were musicians well-known on the scene and Cosplayers from Taiwan and Canada. The Japanese Consul General Ryuta Mizuuchi presented a word of welcome at the opening ceremony of the event.

V., systematically analyses developments in this area with a view to developing future concepts on this basis. As part of SevenCenters of Germany Düsseldorf Congress supports this project – and draws inspiration on it. The term “New Work”, innovative ways of working in the global and digital age, determines not only event formats but also the back offices of more and more companies – to the benefit of customers.Mehr
